It is a short but particularly interesting route from an historical aspect and because of the landscape. Part of the path winds on the ridge that acts as a watershed between the Metauro and Foglia rivers. From the inhabited centre of Borgo Pace you can go up the paved street in the direction of Passo della Spugna; then you take a dirt road that\’\s often very bumpy, till you reach the top of the ridge, that overlooks the Metauro Valley. You continue walking over a series of the Cossante and Della Rocca mountain tops until you descend to the localities of Cal Bianchino. During the crossing of the ridge impressive scenery won\’\t be lacking: Sassi di Simone and Simoncello in the basin of the Foglia River, the Castle of Pieve in the Metauro Valley, an ancient fortified village which has a watchtower that in the past was used for defence.

Ascending from Lamoli you will reach the Apennine ridge on the Macinelle side. The ridge\’\s line singles out a segment of the Italian Path and the European Path. The route goes around a protected floristic area that has great environmental value and goes up to the Bocca Trabaria pass ( 1049 mt. ) that marks the border with Umbria. Going over the Poggio del Romito and the Poggio Tre Termini, you\’\ll have access to the Passo delle Vacche, an old pass for pilgrimages that connected the Abbey of Lamoli with the convent of Monte Casale and that goes to the small artificial basin of Lago del Sole. Then you\’\ll have to ascend again for a little bit to the Ca\’\Scanella Pass, from where you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view that overlooks Sasso di Simone and Simoncello, Monte Carpegna and the massifs of Catria and Nerone. Continuing, the route leads to the Vallepetra\’\s abandoned farmhouses. Going along Rio della Villa you will reach a small village with the same name, where a powerful medieval guard tower stands, then crossing the localities of Parchiule and following the impressive Auro Valley, where it is possible to see smoking charcoal pits, you will finally reach Borgo Pace.

Not a very difficult route. From Mercatello sul Metauro, going up the local road and passing the localities of Cal Bianchino you will reach the watershed between the Foglia and Metauro Rivers ( 625 mt. ), from where you can admire a view as far as the eye can see: from Monte Nerone to Alpe della Luna to Sasso Simone and Simoncello. The route goes to the localities of Il Baciuccaro and Sorbetolo, marked as historical centres inserted in an agrarian landscape of great esteem . Here the descent towards Sant\’\Angelo in Vado by street or alternative paths begins. You can stop to visit the interesting village and/or for lunch. You will continue towards Peglio, a typical medieval village clinging to an escarpment and with a tower above it, through an agrarian landscape that is still intact.

The route starts in the localities of Palazzi, winding through the most typical natural environment of the Upper Metauro Valley. It starts from a height of 384 mt. and reaches its highest point, 1062 mt., in the localities of Montaccio; then it descends with characteristic paths, that are also difficult from a technical point of view, to the small and charming village of Lamoli ( 600 mt. ). In Lamoli you will be able to visit the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Michele Arcangelo delle Lamole, whose origins date back to the IX century, a perfectly restored jewel of Romanic architecture. The route continues through paths and single tracks and also on well- trodden ground, permitting bikers to enjoy 360 degree views: from the karsts of Nerone, Catria and Cucco, to the regional park of Sassi di Simone and Simoncello. During the excursion there are many historical and cultural places to visit, such as the imposing guard tower of Metola and the old defensive bulwark of Massa Trabaria.

Percorso di media difficoltà. Da Borgo Pace si prende la SS 73bis verso Bocca Trabaria, dopo 6 Km di falsopiano in salita si raggiunge Lamoli, sulla sinistra la suggestiva abbazia benedettina, ancora in falso piano per 1 Km circa, in località Ca’ Pezzolo, a quota 625 inizia la salita di 7 Km verso il passo. La strada corre fra boschi e piccoli campi ancora coltivati, a tratti fiancheggia il torrente Meta. Raggiunto il passo di Bocca Trabaria a quota 1049 si apre lo straordinario spettacolo dell’alta valle del Tevere, si consiglia una sosta per tirare il fiato e ammirare il panorama. Si riprende in discesa, 15 Km, fino a San Giustino a quota 336, senza entrare nell’abitato, tenersi sulla sinistra, al cavalcavia scendere sulla SS 3bis verso Città di Castello, 13 Km pianeggianti, raggiunta la città ci si tiene sulla sinistra fino a imboccare la SS 257, dopo un breve falsopiano inizia la salita di Bocca Serriola, 14 Km pedalabili, superato il passo, quota 730, discesa per 12 Km fino Apecchio, quota 425, poi 11 Km di falsopiano in discesa fino a Piobbico, quota 334. Tenendosi sulla sinistra si prende la provinciale verso Urbania, falsopiano in salita, quindi ultima modesta salita fino al passo di Ca’Marcuccio, quota 540, discesa e falsopiano in discesa fino a Urbania, 7 Km quota 273. A sinistra si riprende la SS 73bis, direzione Sant’Angelo in Vado, superata la cittadina, 10 Km, e Mercatello sul Metauro, 6 Km, dopo 4 Km si raggiunge Borgo Pace.

Percorso di discreta difficoltà. Da Borgo Pace si prende la SS 73bis verso Mercatello, si prosegue fino a Sant’Angelo in Vado, complessivi 10 Km di falsopiano in discesa, superato il paese si prende la strada provinciale sulla sinistra e si sale sul Sorbetolo (Monte Picchio), valico a 5 Km quota 567, in discesa fino a Piandimeleto, 6 Km quota 319, superato anche questo paese, dopo 2 Km pianeggianti a sinistra verso Carpegna, la strada è un falsopiano in salita quindi sale decisamente fino a Carpegna, 12 Km complessivi che consentono di raggiungere la quota di 748. Raggiunta Carpegna si hanno 2 opzioni: proseguire sulla sinistra verso il passo Cantoniera a 4 Km quota 1007, oppure salire sul Monte Carpegna 6 Km di salita dura fino a raggiungere quota 1415 (arrivo di una storica tappa del Giro d’Italia 1973 vinta da Eddy Merckx). In entrambi i casi si prosegue in discesa fino a Pennabilli, quota 629, da qui verso Badia Tedalda, a 21 Km quota 756, di seguito – sulla SS 3bis – si sale al passo di Via Maggio, a 5 Km quota 1075, in discesa verso la valle del Tevere per 13 Km fino a raggiungere la quota di 430. Falsopiano in discesa fino a Sansepolcro a 13 Km quota 330 poi verso San Giustino, 5 Km pianeggianti, qui, sulla sinistra, si prende la SS 73bis verso il passo di Bocca Trabaria, 15 Km a quota 1049. Superato il passo, in discesa fino a Lamoli, 8 Km 7 discesa 1 falsopiano quota 600, altri 6 Km di falsopiano in discesa per raggiungere Borgo Pace.
